Keno Variations

Keno Variations

Are you a Keno fanatic, but getting a bit tired of the standard version of the game? Good news! There are several keno variations that will help keep it fresh and exciting to you. Here are some of the most popular alternate variations of keno.

All of these keno variations have certain traits in common: The game starts with buying a ticket. There is a keno board with 80 sets of numbers. Your object is to predict the numbers that the computer will randomly select. You mark these on your keno ticket. The numbers are then selected by the computer. You get a “hit” if one of the numbers matches a number you selected on your card.

One of the issues with many variations of games, such as keno, is that sometimes, those who develop the game expect to paid a licensing fee. That’s the case with 5-Card Keno, but it still has managed to earn a following for itself. 5-Card Keno is an enjoyable variation that throws in elements of poker and elements of lottery to create something truly innovative.

5-Card keno is played on a video machine. Players play against the machine. They have three chances in three rounds during the game to increase their bets. To begin, the player chooses and places his bet on a particular hand (the same hands used in five card stud). If the hand selected has a pre-assigned hand ranking or value, then the player has won, and he receives a payout determined by the poker hand’s value. The player then makes a second decision, choosing a second poker hand. The player again wins if the hand has a pre-determined value that was assigned by the house. Finally, the player gets a payout if the two poker hands that he chose have matches.

This keno variation originated in Australia. The play is mostly like standard keno, but with one change:  the game’s “Power” is always based on the 20th number that’s drawn. Whenever a player’s pick matches this 20th number, the amount that he wins are quadrupled. This version is enticing because of the high winnings possible.

This game is another version of Power Keno. However, in Super Keno, it’s the first number drawn which, if you match it, quadruples your winnings.

In this version, the object is to choose groups of different numbers. Each group has the same amount of numbers in it. For instance, you can select three groups; each of the three groups will have six numbers. The concept here is that it gives you more than one way of winning. Conventional wisdom and probabilities say that you’ll have a better chance of a “hit” in this version of Keno if, if you also wager the maximum bet amount.

Although the standard keno machine has a fixed jackpot, this changes with a progressive-jackpot machine. On these, any time a bet is placed but not won, the jackpot gets bigger. To win the whole jackpot, the player must match 10 numbers.

Keno History

Keno History

Keno is an intriguing game with just an intriguing history, dating back more than 2,000 years. We first find traces of it during the Han Dynasty in China. According to legend, a prominent Chinese official named Cheung Heung wanted a way of raising money to provide food for his troops and to help fund the building of the Great War. Heung introduced a game that would eventually evolve into Keno, paying to take part.

In those early years, it was found that the best way to communicate the picks and results was by carrier pigeon. This idea was clever because the soldiers were losing morale at a disturbing pace, and Heung was losing money daily until this early incarnation of Keno saved him.

Surprisingly, Keno kept the same basic format for most of its 2,000 year history.  Most other casino games change more in just a few hundred years than Keno did in two millennia. True, the number of characters has changed from 120 to 80, but otherwise, today’s version of the game is remarkably similar to the very first game.

It wasn’t until the 1800s, though, that Keno found its way to the United States. This was during the massive Chinese Immigration of the 19th century, as millions of immigrants carried the game with them.  The game remained popular with these immigrants and also became popular with the locals in America, too. One problem: The locals could not easily distinguish among the Chinese symbols, so they soon translated the game into simple recognizable numbers. This was also the time when the character count was reduced to 80.

Although the rules themselves have remained fairly consistent over the centuries, the name has changed. There were several different names for it, including the “Chinese Lottery,” until the name was officially changed to Keno in 1931–the year that Nevada legalized gambling.

After Keno became a hit in Las Vegas, it quite naturally moved out into other casino cities, such as Atlantic City.  Plus, as often happens when games became popular in Vegas, Keno traveled from the U.S. again overseas, to become popular in casinos around the world.

In recent years, that has included online casinos. In the 1990s, online casinos became practical alternatives to real-life casinos. And almost immediately, Keno joined the growing number of games offered. It has since become one of the most popular of online casino games. And because the game has so much mystique associated with its history, it now seems almost blasphemy for any casino, including online casinos, to change it too much.

At the opening of each Keno game, the payout chances are clearly displayed. In an online casino, the minimum bets are lower, making it accessible to even the casual players.

Today, the future of casinos seems to lie largely with online gambling. Keno appears to be poised for a growth spurt unlike anything in its history, as the game opens up to audiences around the world, looking to become involved in this fun, mysterious game.

The first online lottery introduced by the Florida Lottery was the Florida Lotto. It was introduced in April 1988, along with another online game known as Cash. The first tickets were sold on April 29, 1988 and the first drawing was held on May 7, 1988. The Florida Lotto was originally played by selecting 6 numbers out of a field of 49 numbers. The cost for each play was one dollar and the drawings were all held on Saturday nights. 6 numbers were selected each time and those who could match 3 or more numbers could win the lottery. Those players who had all six numbers won the jackpot, which was paid to them in 20 equal installments that were given annually.

The Florida Lotto is a type of a mutual winning game, in which the prizes are dependent on the total number of tickets sold as well as the number of winners for each prize level of the game. If such a situation occurs that no ticket wins the top prize pool then that pool is rolled over to the next week.

The prize structure of the Florida Lotto Online was revamped in 1993, so that the jacket pool could be increased. After the changes were made, the pool was increased to 6 million. This new structure was followed till 1998 but after that, another change was made. The winners were then allowed to receive their winnings in a lump sum rather than annually. More changes were brought about in the following months. The total number of annual payments for the pool was increased to 30 from 20. This actually made the Florida Lotto to artificially increase their advertised jackpot without actually making any change to the amount of cash winnings.

The most major change to the Florida Lotto was made in October 1999. The total numbers in the field were increased from 49 to 53, which increased the difficulty of the jackpot. Also, a mid-week drawing was added to lottery and from then on, drawings were also made on Wednesdays. In 2008, another feature was added to Florida Lotto, known as the Lotto plus. In this feature, players were allowed to increase their wagers by 2 or 3 dollars. In 2009, the Florida Lottery introduced a new game by the name of Powerball, and this affected the sales of Florida Lotto.

Any US citizen, who is 18 years or above, can play Florida Lotto online. This excludes those who are employed by the Florida Lottery or are the immediate family members of these employees. The winners are not allowed to remain anonymous, because the rules state that the identity and address of the winner will be provided to any interested third party. Any unclaimed prize money is used for education enhancement in the region and other developmental works.
